Although well-seasoned firewood can burn effectively, the moisture content varies considerably. One batch may be perfectly dry, while another may still contain too much moisture to burn efficiently. On average, seasoned wood rarely drops below a 25% moisture content (unless we enjoy an exceptionally dry summer). This means you’ll have a fire that is hard to light, much more smoky and because the energy is being used to evaporate the moisture rather than give heat out into the room, your fire won’t actually be that warm. 

Kiln-dried firewood is dried in a temperature-controlled kiln where warm air circulates around the logs. It’s dried at temperatures around 70°C for roughly 3 to 4 days. This controlled, high-heat process rapidly extracts moisture from deep within the wood fibers, bringing the moisture level down to below 20%. Because every batch is dried under controlled conditions, you receive a consistent product with predictable performance. The result is dry, lightweight wood that is ready to burn cleanly and efficiently the moment it arrives at your door. Hardwood vs. Softwood: Which is best?

Why does my woodburner glass keep turning black?

How should I set the air vents on my stove?

When lighting your stove, open both the top and bottom air vents fully to feed oxygen to the kindling. Once the fire is thoroughly established and the main logs are burning, completely close the bottom vent (which feeds air underneath). Wood burns best from the top down on a bed of ash. Control the burn rate and temperature purely using the top vent, throttling it back until you have a calm, steady flame.

Can I burn treated wood or pallets in my stove?

Absolutely not. You should never burn painted, stained, or pressure-treated wood, nor manufactured boards like MDF or plywood. The glues, chemicals, and preservatives used in these materials release toxic, corrosive fumes into your home and the environment, and they will rapidly ruin the internal components of your expensive woodburner. Stick purely to natural, untreated hardwood.
